ComfyUI low VRAM

Can SeedVR2 Run on 8GB VRAM? OOM Fixes That Work

SeedVR2 on 8GB VRAM in ComfyUI is a community experiment, not an official promise. Reduce resolution, try INT8 or GGUF, VAE tiling, then BlockSwap.

Direct answer

For a SeedVR2 out-of-memory error, find the failing stage first: encoding or decoding points to VAE tiling; upscaling points to model memory, offload, or community BlockSwap. Test a smaller output and change one setting at a time. NumZ publishes a low-memory example, but it is not a ByteDance hardware guarantee or a benchmark run by this site.

  • The table below labels community examples separately from unmeasured configurations; there is no universal 18GB minimum established here.
  • Try native 3B INT8 first, then reduce resolution, use VAE tiling and CPU offload, and only then test community GGUF or BlockSwap.
  • Keep video batch size useful for temporal consistency whenever VRAM allows it.

  • 8GB VRAM is an experimental community target, not an official SeedVR2 guarantee.
  • Start with current ComfyUI and native 3B INT8, then reduce resolution before adding memory workarounds.
  • Missing nodes, CUDA errors, and model path mistakes are setup issues, not proof that the source cannot be upscaled.
  • Browser workflows avoid local dependency conflicts and model downloads when the output matters more than node control.

Start with the smallest stable SeedVR2 job

Start with an updated ComfyUI and a workflow that matches your model files. Its native 3B INT8 template is a separate path from the NumZ community examples in the table below. Neither a model filename nor GPU capacity alone proves that your chosen source and output will fit.

GGUF, BlockSwap, and aggressive low-memory controls belong to community integrations, not the default native template. They may help a smaller card, but a successful launch is not a quality or delivery guarantee. Treat 8GB as a measured experiment and stop after a bounded sequence of changes.

Treat the first run as a hardware probe, not as the final creative output. Record the model file, input dimensions, target resolution, batch size, VAE tiling settings, offload device, and whether BlockSwap is enabled. If a later run fails, you can compare it against a known working baseline instead of changing five settings at once.

  • Test one image or one short clip before a batch.
  • Use native 3B INT8 before trying FP16 or community GGUF models.
  • Keep the first output modest, then step up to 2K or 4K.
  • Write down every setting that produced a successful run.

Use offload, VAE tiling, and BlockSwap in the right order

Do not turn on every memory feature immediately. First reduce the target resolution and batch size. If the failure is still an OOM during model inference, move the DiT model offload device to CPU and use BlockSwap. If the log shows encoding or decoding pressure, enable VAE tiling and lower the tile size gradually. Smaller tiles reduce peak memory but add processing time and can create seams if overlap is too low.

BlockSwap is a community memory workaround with transfer overhead. Check platform support before using it: NumZ disables it on Apple Silicon unified-memory systems. A hosted tool can avoid local tuning, but compare its quoted cost and upload policy against your needs rather than assuming it is cheaper.

  • Reduce resolution and batch before changing dependencies.
  • Use CPU offload when the model itself will not fit.
  • Enable VAE tiling when encoding or decoding hits OOM.
  • Increase tile overlap if seams appear.
  • Use the browser workspace when local tuning takes longer than the job.

Why SeedVR2 stays in VRAM or suddenly becomes slow

Separate model caching from CPU offload before changing settings. A cached model can make the next run faster, but it may leave too little memory when another large model or VAE loads. If GPU use drops while system RAM grows and each step takes much longer, the graph is probably moving work to the CPU rather than keeping the useful compute on the GPU.

Use current native SeedVR2 nodes first, load one large workflow at a time, close other GPU-heavy apps, and confirm a modest output with the 3B INT8 path. Read the terminal log after every change. If the slowdown begins after switching models, restart once to establish a clean baseline; do not hide a repeatable cache or multi-GPU error by stacking more memory flags.

  • GPU mostly idle plus rising system RAM: check for CPU offload.
  • OOM after changing models: test from one clean restart.
  • Use native SeedVR2 nodes before a custom plug-in fork.
  • Change one of model size, output size, tiling, or offload at a time.

3B vs 7B: compare models inside your existing workflow

The installation guide already covers 3B, 7B, precision, and model folders. Here the question is whether another model improves an output that your machine can complete. Keep the source, target dimensions, and review crops fixed, and record the exact checkpoint and precision. A 3B INT8 versus 7B FP16 run changes both size and precision, so it cannot isolate the effect of parameter count.

This page has no controlled same-input 3B/7B measurements for quality, peak VRAM, or elapsed time. Treat model choice as an experiment, not a speed multiplier or guaranteed quality upgrade. Compare faces, text, and motion before deciding whether a heavier run is worth it. The hosted tools expose their own available settings; these local checkpoint names are not browser URL parameters.

  • Save source, checkpoint, precision, output size, and workflow revision.
  • Measure peak VRAM and elapsed time; record OOM failures too.
  • Compare identical crops and timestamps, not unrelated demos.

Quality settings that matter on low VRAM

For video, batch size affects temporal consistency. The SeedVR2 ComfyUI workflow expects batches that follow the 4n+1 pattern for normal temporal processing, such as 5, 9, 13, or 17 frames. On a tight GPU, you may be tempted to reduce batch size too aggressively; do that only after trying memory optimizations because a tiny batch can reduce motion stability.

For still images, judge results at 100 percent zoom before chasing a larger number. Low-VRAM workflows can produce clean output, but aggressive tiling, extreme denoise, or the wrong model precision can invent texture, soften faces, or create edge artifacts. Save a 2K comparison before spending time on a 4K or 8K render.

  • Use 4n+1 frame batches for video when possible.
  • Compare hair, eyes, logos, and small text at 100 percent zoom.
  • Keep a 2K baseline before producing 4K.
  • Avoid judging quality from a downscaled preview only.

Next step: run one file online

Put one source file through the browser workspace and compare the result with the original before you commit further. The credit cost for the whole task is shown before it starts, so the first run is a measured decision rather than a guess.

Troubleshooting errors people actually search

SeedVR2 missing node

The workflow references a node type that this ComfyUI build cannot load. A native template usually means ComfyUI is outdated; a v2.5 community workflow may require its matching custom node.

Update ComfyUI to 0.28.0 or newer and reopen the official SeedVR2 template first. Only install the matching community node when the workflow explicitly depends on it, then restart and resolve the first terminal error.

CUDA out of memory

The graph, model precision, frame batch, or target resolution is larger than the available VRAM for the current run.

Reduce target size or batch first, then enable VAE tiling, CPU offload, GGUF/FP8 models, or BlockSwap in that order.

model not found

The node loaded correctly, but the workflow-selected model filename does not match the local folder scanned by the node.

Place DiT and VAE files in the documented SeedVR2 model folder, keep filenames unchanged, restart ComfyUI, and select the exact model in the loader.

VAE decode crash

Encoding or decoding large frames can fail separately from DiT model inference, especially at 4K or with long clips.

Enable VAE tiling, start with a conservative tile size and overlap, then increase output size only after a smaller pass succeeds.

ComfyUI Manager install failed

The node package may be blocked by Python environment mismatch, dependency conflicts, or a stale Manager cache.

Confirm the base ComfyUI workflow runs, install one node package at a time, restart, and use the browser workspace when the asset must ship before dependency repair.
