Where 12GB is genuinely comfortable

This is the tier where local SeedVR2 starts to make sense for real production stills rather than just experiments. You are no longer fighting the model to fit; you are making judgment calls about when to step up.
The 7B model is a test, not a default
A conservative 7B run can pass on 12GB, but it can also pass once and fail on a larger aspect ratio. Treat the 7B as a second pass after the 3B output is already promising, not as the first thing you queue.
A heavier model on a damaged source often invents more believable artifacts rather than more truthful detail. The 7B only earns its VRAM when a clean 3B crop shows a reason to push further.
Video on 12GB: short segments first
For video, keep the batch between 5 and 9 frames and test a short 1080p segment before a longer clip. Batch size drives temporal consistency, so do not sacrifice it to chase a longer clip on a tight card.
Long 4K video is not the 12GB sweet spot. If the deliverable is a long 4K clip, a hosted video lane is usually the cleaner path than splitting the job into many small local segments.
The 12GB failure modes to watch
Borderline 7B jobs are the classic 12GB failure: they pass once at a small size and fail at a larger aspect ratio. If a run passes and then fails, the resolution or model changed, not your luck.
Keep background GPU workloads closed. On 12GB the margin is better than 8GB but still small enough that a screen recorder or another AI tool can consume the memory that keeps the job alive.
When 12GB is enough, and when to go hosted
For still-image production, 12GB is usually enough. For long 4K video, frequent batch work, or tight deadlines, a hosted run is the pragmatic choice. The hosted job also gives you a clean reference to compare your local output against.
