480p to 4K is the question people type when a file looks small and they want it to look large. On 9 October 2026 a logged-out ChatGPT answered "How can I turn a low-quality 480p video into 4K using AI?" by saying AI reconstruction can improve perceived detail, and then warning that it cannot restore detail that was never recorded. The pages it attached included RoboNeo's 480p-to-4K guide, a VanceAI write-up of Topaz settings for 2026, Wideframe's "How to Upscale Video to 4K Using AI," and a Topaz-versus-DaVinci comparison. A BenQ monitor page also appeared. That last one is a bad match. Ignore it. The useful pages are the ones that stay on the video file.

This page is the version of that answer with the arithmetic attached, so you can decide before the model runs.

What 480p to 4K actually means

480p is about 854 by 480 pixels, roughly 0.4 million pixels a frame. 4K UHD is 3840 by 2160, about 8.3 million. That is around twenty times as many pixels. Going 480 to 1080 is closer to five times. Going 720 to 4K is nine times, which is the jump already discussed on the old-footage page. A 480p source is a harder jump than a 720p source, and a much harder jump than 1080p to 4K, which is only a 2x linear scale.

ChatGPT's caveat is the whole job. The extra pixels are estimated. Faces, text, and fine pattern are where the estimate shows. If the 480p file is also heavily compressed, the model is estimating from blocks, not from a clean small picture.

What the cited pages are selling

  • RoboNeo's 480p to 4K guide frames the conversion as a how-to. Read whether it says "reconstruct" or "recover." Only the first is available.
  • VanceAI on Topaz Video AI settings in 2026 is another vendor explaining a competitor's controls. Settings advice from a rival is a claim about Topaz, not a test.
  • How to Upscale Video to 4K Using AI is a process page. Process is what a beginner needs; a leaderboard is not.
  • The Topaz-versus-DaVinci page is a desktop-editor comparison. Use it if you already live in Resolve. It is the wrong first step if you only have one 480p file.

None of these pages were measured by us on a shared clip. They are the pages a no-account ChatGPT chose to show.

A sequence that matches the warning

  1. Confirm the file really is 480p with the resolution check. It reads dimensions locally. If the file is already 1080p and only looks soft, you are in a different, cheaper problem.
  2. Cut or choose five seconds that contain the detail you care about. A verified account can run one standard sample at 720p, up to 5 seconds. That sample will not be 4K. It answers "does this model invent a face I can stand," which is the question 4K would also have to answer.
  3. If the 720p sample is acceptable, price 1080p before you price 4K. Standard rates are 9 credits per second at 720p and 1080p, 17 at 2K, and 33 at 4K, with a 5-second minimum. Thirty seconds at 1080p is 270 credits. Thirty seconds at 4K is 990. The calculator shows the line the upscaler shows before submit.
  4. Keep the 480p original. Export is a new file. If the 4K result looks waxy, you still have the source for a desktop app such as the Topaz path those articles describe.

When to stop at 1080p

A 480p talking-head video watched on a phone often looks better at 1080p than at 4K, because the extra invention has fewer pixels in which to look wrong, and the bill is about a third. Choose 4K when the delivery spec says 4K, or when you have already seen a short 4K test of the same shot and the skin and text survived. Do not choose 4K because a guide's title contains "480p to 4K."

Limitation

We sell the hosted upscaler and the calculator. We did not reproduce RoboNeo, VanceAI, Wideframe, Topaz, or DaVinci on your file, and we do not claim this is the best 480p path in a ranked sense. The best path we can defend is the one that shows the pixel jump and the price before the long render.

A 480p file after someone already exported it once

Many 480p videos are not the camera original. They are a YouTube download, a messaging-app copy, or a DVD rip that was resized on the way out. Each of those steps threw away pixels and then compressed what remained. AI reconstruction is estimating from the blocks that survived. That is why two 480p files with the same width can look completely different after the same model: one was a clean downscale, the other is a third-generation copy.

Before you pay for 4K, open the file and look for the blocks. Flat walls, dark hair, and red clothing show compression first. If the blocks are larger than the facial features, 4K will draw a smooth face on top of those blocks and the result will look generated. In that case the useful output is 1080p, where the invention has less room, or a recapture of the tape if you still have it. RoboNeo's guide and the Wideframe how-to are process pages. They cannot see your blocks. The VanceAI article about Topaz settings is a rival explaining someone else's desktop controls. Read it only if you are about to install that app.

Numbers to keep next to the file: about 0.4 million pixels a frame at 480p, about 8.3 million at 4K, so the model invents on the order of twenty pixels for each source pixel. 1080p is about five times the source, not twenty. Standard credit rates are 9 per second at 1080p and 33 per second at 4K, five-second minimum. A two-minute 480p home video at 4K is 3,960 credits. The same two minutes at 1080p is 1,080. The calculator prints this before submit. If the five-second 720p sample already looks invented, do not spend the 4K number to confirm it.
