Try the online upscaler

Anime and game recordings are the two most common use cases for video upscaling — and the two where naive settings produce the most visible damage. Flat colors, hard ink lines, UI text, and motion blur all respond differently to AI upscalers than live-action footage does. This guide covers what to watch for on both sides of the render.

Why anime and game footage are different

Anime is flat colors with sharp, high-contrast lines. Upscalers love the edges, which means they tend to oversharpen them — you get halos, ringing, and a "crunchy" look around line art. Banding is also common: gradients that were smooth in 8-bit sources get exaggerated when the model pushes contrast.

Game recordings add two problems of their own. Interface text (HUD, subtitles, item names) gets warped or thickened by upscalers because it is fine detail that the model guesses at. And fast camera motion produces blur the model interprets as detail to sharpen, which can create smearing that was not in the source.

None of this makes upscaling a bad idea — it changes what you check before and after.

Fix your capture first

The single biggest quality win happens before upscaling: capture clean footage.

  • Record at native resolution and 60 fps if the game supports it
  • In OBS or your capture tool, use a high bitrate — 20 to 50 Mbps for 1080p60 is a reasonable range — and avoid the default streaming bitrates
  • Disable in-game upscalers like DLSS or FSR while recording if possible; they introduce their own artifacts that the AI upscaler then amplifies
  • Do not rescale in the capture software; record at full resolution and let the upscaler do the enlargement

A clean 1080p60 source upscaled to 2K beats a 4K capture that was already smeared by in-game scaling.

Two more capture notes: if you record in HDR, tone-map to SDR before upscaling — HDR-to-SDR conversion after upscaling can crush the very gradients the model just smoothed. And check your source format before uploading: the video upscaler accepts MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, and AVI, so no container conversion is needed for the common capture outputs.

Choose the target resolution

Match the target to the source, not the platform:

  • 720p recordings to 1080p or 2K — 4K from a 720p anime source mostly invents pixels and ruins line art
  • 1080p recordings to 2K — the sweet spot for most content
  • 1080p or higher to 4K — only when the destination truly displays 4K

For anime specifically, SeedVR2.net also has a dedicated cartoon video upscaler route worth checking before the general tool.

If the file you actually need to enlarge is a still rather than a clip — a manga page, a character illustration, or one key frame you will reuse as artwork — that is a different job with different failure points, and the anime image upscaler covers it.

Model choice for this content

Start with the standard model on a 5-second test clip (9 credits per second at 720p or 1080p, 17 at 2K). If lines come back with halos or textures smear, step up to FlashVSR (30 credits per second at 1080p) or the seedvr2 flagship (49 per second at 1080p) and test the same clip again. The full rate table is in the models comparison.

Cost scales fast with long recordings: a 60-second 1080p clip is 540 credits on standard and 2,940 on seedvr2. Cut the recording to the part you will actually publish before upscaling — trimming a highlight out of an hour-long session is free, and it is the biggest credit saver in this workflow.

What to inspect after upscaling

Check every output at 100% zoom before publishing:

  1. Line art edges — halos or ringing mean the model oversharpened; try a different model or a smaller target
  2. Gradients and skies — banding should be reduced, not introduced
  3. HUD and subtitle text — it may look different from the source; decide whether that matters for your edit
  4. Fast-motion sections — smearing is the tell that the source blur was too heavy
  5. One frame from each scene, not just the first

Budget expectations

JobCost
5-second 720p test, Standard45 credits (free as a first-video trial)
60 seconds at 1080p, Standard540 credits
60 seconds at 2K, Standard1,020 credits
60 seconds at 1080p, SeedVR22,940 credits

Anime and game footage rewards preparation: capture clean, trim hard, test on 5 seconds, and only then pay for the full render. The video upscaler shows the exact credit total in the preflight for whatever you upload.
