How to Fix Compressed WhatsApp Video Quality

Try the online upscaler

You received a video through WhatsApp or WeChat, and it looks far worse than what the sender saw on their phone. The clip is soft, blocky, and full of motion artifacts. The first thing to understand is why that happened — because the best fix is often not AI at all.

Why messenger video looks bad

Messaging apps re-encode almost every video you send. They reduce resolution, drop the bitrate, and throw away fine detail so the file travels fast and stays under size limits. A 4K phone recording commonly arrives on the other side as a 720p or 480p clip at a fraction of the original bitrate.

That damage is permanent in the file you received. No tool can restore detail that was discarded during compression. What an upscaler can do is smooth the blocky edges, sharpen what remains, and enlarge the file back to a usable resolution — the result will look better than the compressed file, but it will not be identical to the original recording.

Step 1: Try to get the original file first

This is the highest-impact step in the whole workflow and it costs nothing:

  • Ask the sender for the original file. In WhatsApp, files sent as a "document" are often not re-compressed the way media attachments are
  • Use the HD upload option in WhatsApp when the sender re-sends
  • For WeChat, ask the sender to send the file through a cloud link (Drive, WeTransfer, or similar) instead of the chat

A 1080p or 4K original upscales into genuinely better output. A 480p messenger clip will only ever be a salvage job.

Step 2: Check what you actually have

Drop the file into the free resolution check. It reads width and height locally — nothing is uploaded — and shows the next sensible target.

File size is also a useful signal: a 30-second clip under 5 MB has been compressed hard, and you should expect limited recovery. A 30-second clip over 30 MB is a much better starting point.

Step 3: Upscale the clip

  1. Open the video upscaler
  2. Upload your file (MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, and AVI are accepted)
  3. Start with the standard model
  4. Pick a realistic target: 480p to 1080p is a reasonable jump; 720p to 2K is the ceiling for most messenger footage. Pushing a 480p clip to 4K mostly invents pixels
  5. Confirm the credit cost in the preflight and submit

Costs bill per second with a 5-second minimum: the standard model is 9 credits per second at 720p and 1080p, and 17 at 2K. A 10-second clip at 1080p is 90 credits. A new account can run its first video job free — standard model, 720p, up to 5 seconds, verified email — which is enough to preview how your footage responds.

What improves and what stays broken

After upscaling, expect:

  • Sharper edges and less visible blockiness
  • Smoother gradients and reduced banding
  • A larger, more usable resolution for editing or posting

Do not expect:

  • True detail recovery in heavily crushed areas
  • Fixes for frozen frames, smearing, or audio problems
  • A file that matches the original recording

Watch the result at 100% zoom before deciding. If the upscale amplifies compression artifacts instead of hiding them, drop the target resolution one step and try again.

Troubleshooting: when the result looks worse

Occasionally an upscale amplifies the compression instead of hiding it. If that happens:

  • Drop the target one step. A 480p clip pushed to 2K often shows invented detail; at 1080p the same model may look clean
  • Test a short section first. A new account's free first video run (standard model, 720p, up to 5 seconds) is the cheapest way to see how your specific clip responds
  • Check motion-heavy sections. Compression artifacts concentrate in fast movement; if only those sections look bad, upscale in parts or accept them as-is
  • Watch for color shifts. Re-encoded clips sometimes shift slightly; compare against the original before publishing

Keep it clean when you re-send

If the upscaled file is going back through a messenger, the app will compress it again and undo part of your work. Send the finished file through a file-sharing link or as a document attachment to preserve the quality you just paid credits for.

The practical order is: get the original, check the resolution, upscale to a realistic target, and deliver through a channel that does not re-compress. Start the video part at the video upscaler — the preflight shows the exact cost before anything runs.
