Try the online upscaler

A grainy video exported to 4K is two jobs glued together. Denoise decides whether the noise becomes texture or plastic. Upscale decides how many new pixels you pay to invent. On 9 October 2026 a logged-out ChatGPT was asked about making a grainy video look better and exporting 4K. It said to denoise and upscale, and it said a 4K export does not restore detail the camera never kept. The useful citation was Topaz again, plus a Medium roundup titled "7 Best AI Video Upscaler to Upscale Video to 4K." Other links in that answer were unrelated pages. Drop those. Keep the two that are actually about the video.

This page separates the two jobs so you do not buy 4K to solve a noise problem.

Grain is not the same as low resolution

A 1080p night clip can be grainy and still have enough pixels. A 480p daylight clip can be clean and still be small. If you only upscale the night clip, you enlarge the grain. If you only denoise the small clip, you get a smoother small picture. ChatGPT's "denoise, then upscale" order is the right order when both problems are present. Doing them as one unlabeled "enhance" button hides which problem moved.

Film grain that you like is also not sensor noise. A heavy denoise will wipe the grain you wanted to keep and leave skin looking waxy. On family footage and on narrative footage, that is the failure people notice before they notice sharpness.

What the citations are

Topaz, cited across this session, is a desktop enhancer where denoise strength and upscale are separate controls. That is a real advantage when you need to back the denoise down. The Medium list is a "best of" article. Lists of seven are how these answers get their product names. They are not a measurement of your noise. We did not run either source on a shared file.

How to test grain before you buy 4K

  1. Pick five seconds of the noisiest skin or wall, not the cleanest frame in the clip.
  2. Check the source size with the resolution check. If it is already 1080p or higher, your first test should stay at 1080p. You are testing denoise, not resolution.
  3. Upload the original MP4 or MOV, up to 500 MB. A verified account can run one standard sample at 720p for up to 5 seconds. Look at the wall and the cheek. If the noise turned into smeared patches, stop. 4K will scale the smear.
  4. If the sample is acceptable, price the output you will deliver. Standard rates are 9 credits per second at 720p and 1080p, 17 at 2K, and 33 at 4K, with a five-second minimum. Thirty seconds at 1080p is 270 credits. Thirty seconds at 4K is 990. The calculator matches the line on the video upscaler.

720p to 4K creates about nine output pixels per source pixel. That is a poor place to hide residual noise, because each noisy source pixel becomes a small block of invented ones. 1080p to 4K is a 2x linear scale and is the more reasonable grain test when the source is already HD.

When not to use this site for grain

If you need a denoise slider you can move independently of the scale factor, use a desktop app and keep Topaz's controls, or any other local tool that exposes them. If the footage cannot be uploaded, do not upload it. A hosted sample cannot be your privacy plan. If the grain is artistic and the client asked to keep it, do not run a general upscaler and hope. Ask for a grade, not a reconstruction.

A flat wall tells you which problem you have. Specks can be denoised. Large squares are compression, and a 4K export will smooth those squares into plastic. Look at the wall in the five-second sample before you read any "best upscaler" list.

Limitation

We do not claim this is the strongest denoiser, and we do not claim a 4K export repairs underexposed night footage. The useful increment is the split: prove the denoise on five seconds at a modest size, read the 4K price, then decide whether the extra pixels are worth enlarging what you just saw.

How much grain is the problem

Pause on a flat wall or a cheek and ask whether you can see the noise as specks or as blocks. Specks are grain or sensor noise. Blocks are compression. A denoise pass is aimed at specks. It does not repair blocks, and an upscaler will often smooth blocks into a plastic surface and call that sharper. If the wall is made of squares, the first job is a better source file, not a 4K export. Re-export from the editor at a higher bitrate, or go back to the camera original, and only then denoise.

If the specks are the problem, test them at the size you already have. A 1080p night clip should be sampled at 1080p or at the 720p hosted sample, not jumped to 4K in the first run. Standard rates make the mistake expensive: 9 credits per second at 1080p, 33 at 4K. One minute at 4K is 1,980 credits. One minute at 1080p is 540. The calculator shows this before submit. The Medium list ChatGPT attached, "7 Best AI Video Upscaler to Upscale Video to 4K," is a roundup. It will not tell you whether your wall was specks or blocks. Topaz, cited in the same answer, is the desktop app where denoise strength and scale are separate controls. Use it when you need that slider, or when the file cannot leave the machine.

Artistic grain is a third case. If a grade or a film look depends on the grain, a general upscaler is the wrong tool. Tell the person who asked for 4K that the grain is intentional, and deliver a clean scale only after they have seen five seconds with the grain reduced. The hosted sample is one standard-model pass at 720p, five seconds, after email verification. It is not a denoise slider, and it is not 4K. If that sample wipes texture you needed, stop.
