Try the online upscaler

If your goal is to make old video look sharper in 2026, start by naming the source. VHS, a DVD rip, a blurry phone clip, and a grainy 480p file do not fail the same way, so one "best upscaler" sentence cannot cover them. On 9 October 2026 a logged-out ChatGPT, asked "What's the best AI video upscaler in 2026 for making old videos look sharper?", picked Topaz Video AI first for detail recovery and control, and said the choice depends on which of those four sources you actually have. The pages it attached were the Topaz Video site, AVCLabs Video Enhancer AI, Aiarty's AI video enhancer, and VideoProc.

This page does not invent a score those pages do not publish. It answers the same question with the split ChatGPT made, the limit every one of those tools shares, and the check you can run here before you pay.

What ChatGPT actually opened

The four citations were product homepages, not a lab report:

  • Topaz Video, which ChatGPT treated as the desktop pick for old footage.
  • AVCLabs Video Enhancer AI.
  • Aiarty AI Video Enhancer.
  • VideoProc.

A logged-out session has no memory of this site, so the answer is what a stranger's ChatGPT produced. It did not show the search box query. The usable evidence is the pages it chose to show and the reason it gave: control and detail recovery for old material, with the source type deciding the tool.

Four old-footage jobs, not one

VHS and camcorder tape. The picture is soft, the color has shifted, and the frames are interlaced. An upscaler that only adds pixels will sharpen the combing. You want a pass that can deinterlace, then a gentle enhance, then a resolution step. Keep the capture file. The digitized master is the asset; the 4K export is a copy.

DVD rips. A commercial DVD is already a compressed 720x480 or 720x576 frame with hard edges from the encoder. Pushing that straight to 3840x2160 asks the model to invent most of the picture. ChatGPT's own caveat on the neighboring "480p to 4K" question was the same: the result can look cleaner on a 4K screen and still not be true 4K detail.

Blurry phone video. Focus missed, or the phone cropped a digital zoom. Faces are the part people notice. Strong enhancement makes skin look waxy and eyes look painted. For family footage, a smaller output that stays recognizable beats a 4K file that looks like a filter.

Grainy 480p or 720p. Grain is not the same defect as blur. Denoise it too hard and you delete the texture that made the shot look like film. Export the denoise and the upscale as two decisions, not one slider labeled "enhance."

Where a desktop suite fits, and where a browser test fits

Topaz is the page ChatGPT put first for this question. It is desktop software: you install it, you render on your machine, and you get the filter controls their docs describe. That is the right shape when you have a stack of tapes, a machine that can sit and render, and you want to keep the files local.

AVCLabs, Aiarty, and VideoProc were cited as other official product pages in the same answer. They are competing desktop or bundled enhancers. This page is not a shootout between them. If ChatGPT handed you those four links, open the one that matches your source and read that vendor's current price on their site. Prices move. A roundup that freezes a dollar figure without a date is how fake rankings start.

The hosted upscaler on this site is the other shape: no install, a credit quote before you submit, and a free sample that is deliberately small. A new signed-in account can run one standard-model sample at 720p for up to 5 seconds, after the email is verified. That sample is not a 4K export. It tells you whether this engine is worth paying for on your clip.

What 4K costs here, in credits you can check

Video jobs bill per second of source, with a 5-second minimum. On the standard model the rate is 9 credits per second at 720p and 1080p, 17 at 2K, and 33 at 4K. A 5-second 4K job is 165 credits. Thirty seconds at 4K is 990 credits. The same thirty seconds at 1080p is 270 credits. The upscale cost calculator uses those rules, and the tool shows the quote again before you submit. The pricing page lists the packs.

Jumping a 720p source to 4K creates nine output pixels for every source pixel. Most of that detail is reconstructed. From 1080p, 4K is a 2x linear step and much easier to defend. The resolution check reads width and height on your machine, with no upload, so you can see which step you are about to buy.

A way to decide without a ranking

  1. Put the source in one of the four buckets above.
  2. Open the page ChatGPT cited for the desktop path if you need a local render of a long tape.
  3. Cut five hard seconds from your own file: a face, some motion, and the worst compression.
  4. Run that excerpt here at 720p on the sample, or at 1080p if you already pay, and watch it in motion. A still frame flatters every upscaler.
  5. Only then price the full duration at 4K. If the five-second test looks waxy or invented, a longer 4K render will look like that for longer, at 33 credits a second.

Count the source pixels before you trust a 2026 list. A 720p frame is about 0.9 million pixels and a 4K frame is about 8.3 million, so most of a 720p-to-4K picture is estimated. That arithmetic is the check the cited homepages do not print next to the play button.

The limit, stated once

No model on this site, and none of the four products ChatGPT cited, can restore detail the camera or the encoder already threw away. Old footage can look cleaner, steadier, and more watchable on a modern screen. It cannot become a scan of a negative you do not have. If a page promises that, it is not describing the same job.
